What Makes Us Crazy

Recently stumbled on a “rant” about the font used for the titles for the movie “AVATAR.” Apparently the font Papyrus (check your MS Word fonts—it’s there) is held in low esteem by many people. My first reaction was, come on, this is what you’re upset about? This is what you get passionate enough about to devote a blog to it? With all the real issues in the world, this is what you’ve decided makes you crazy? On a scale of one to ten, my concern about the font was zero; it does not affect my life/happiness/comfort level at all.

Okay, I must admit, I hate Courier. When people in my writer’s group bring stories printed in that nearly-unreadable font, I cringe. But there’s a difference between a fleeting, private cringe and a public flogging.

I find it interesting to notice what drives others over the edge. Maybe it’s because I’ve developed a Zen-like calm about most things. Traffic? It’ll clear up. Someone stole my parking space? Oh, well, I need the walk anyway. Someone in the 10-or-fewer grocery line with 15 items? So what? My husband’s company keeps letting people go and restructuring? All right, that one worries me a little.

Do you “go off” about stuff? What drives you crazy? What drives others crazy but doesn’t bother you? If you hate the font I’m using, sorry. It’s automatic with the blog and I can’t change it. And it doesn’t bother me.

  1. As I age... not much bothers me.... BUT what drives me nuts are "mean people" or "bullies". You know who I'm talking about. They love the power over someone. They don't bother me anymore --but now I feel like the guardian for anyone who is picked on ! I no longer sit, watch and stew - I speak up! Watch out bullies of the world!

  2. I'm like mbclark87, as I get older, fewer things really bother me. Annoy me? Yes. But I can usually let it go. Well, Okay -- there is ONE thing that really does drive me crazy. It's when folks won't put their grocery carts in the cart rack or take them back inside the store. It's rude and lazy. So, if you see a crazy 40-something bleach-blonde chick in Greer SC rounding up all the carts in the Wal-mart parking lot, and straightening out the ones in the cart rack, it's probably me.

  3. I try to maintain that Peaceful Easy Feeling, no matter the font, or the traffic, hurt feelings, etc. BUT, I find my ability to do this often varies with the weather, the phase of the moon, and if I've had chocolate recently. :) Some days things get to me that roll right off my back other days. But not fonts...never fonts.

  4. Okay....
Just returned from Walmart in Casa Grande, AZ. We needed a few things after just arriving at our RV Resort. Walked through the isles and noticed all children screaming and out of control. One small child (don't know ages since we have no children or grandchildren). This one could speak (although in mono syllables) and was about waist high. Went to the deli section, grabbed a ham, and proceeded to act like he was swinging it like a baseball bat at his brother. The mother (could she have been 18?) didn't say a word. I looked at the chld, making eye contact, and sternly told him to behave - that was food. Put it back unless he was going to buy it. He looked at his ?mother? who looked away. Lucky for him, he put it back. Wouldn't touch the child, but might grab the mother.
....so that is what iritates me today. Changes on a daily basis. Doesn't cause stress because as a woman over 55 and downright mean, I'll tell it like it is and stand my ground.
    So there!
